NB: For use by physicians only

To be used by doctors with a knowledge of the effect and side effects of topical cantharadine only. Not for patient use. There is a small risk of post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation in some patients.

Description:

This mixture contains 0.7% cantharadine in an adherent collodion base. Cantharadin is a vesicating agent.

Indications:

  • Plane warts
  • Facial warts
  • Palpebral warts
  • Molluscum contagiosum
  • Periungual warts

Cantharadese is indicated for the topical treatment of superficial warts and molluscum contagiosum.

Mechanism of action:

Cantharadin is a potent vesicating agent. It results in acantholysis resulting in exfoliation of the epidermis. The basal layer remains intact and there is minimal effect on the dermis. This limits the potential for scarring.

Contraindications:

  • Treatment of mosaic warts
  • Pregnancy
  • Do not use on mucosal tissue.
  • Do not use on pigmented lesions where the diagnosis is uncertain.
  • Do not use on extensive areas at any one time as systemic absorption is possible.

Dosage and administration:

No paring or cutting of the skin is required. Use a cotton tipped bud or applicator stick. Apply one layer of Cantharadese to the wart and a 1-3mm margin around the wart. Allow to dry . Administration is painless. Cover with non porous occlusive tape for 4 hours for larger warts or thicker epithelium.

A blister will form within 24 hours. This may be painful or inflamed. Application of a topical antibiotic or non-irritant antibacterial may be helpful to prevent secondary infection if blisters are large or in areas likely to be rubbed. Use of a mild analgesic is needed in some cases. Allow tissue to re-epithelialise before re-treatment.

Re treatment of warts may be required after 1-2 weeks. Occlusion with a non-porous tape may aid penetration. Plantar warts, mosaic warts and heavily keratinized warts may not respond to this treatment.

Pain management:

Warn the patient that the blister may be painful and may last up to 4 days. Treatment with a mild analgesic may be needed. To minimize pain, instruct patient to remove any dressing and wash with water if any pain or irritation occurs.

Precautions:

  • Flammable
  • Close bottle tightly immediately after use to prevent evaporation.
  • Store at room temperature.
  • FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY!
